6th Grade Science

4/17/2012
Hi All, we are starting our animal book today. I am going to attach the guidelines and the guiding questions

 3/23/12
Hi Everyone! I am glad to be back. I hope you all had a great Spring Break. Right now we are working on a Bird Unit. You are studying a bird found in Charlotte or in coastal North Carolina. The projects are due on Monday for 6th Green and Blue, and on Tuesday for Purple. We will have a quiz on Birds on Tuesday for Green and on Wednesday for Purple and Blue.  Students can prepare for the quiz by reading the section in the book, go over their notes, and go over homework.

3/20/12 We had a wonderful time during 6th Grade Service Learning on Tuesday. 2/3 of the 6th grade went to McGill Rose Garden and worked with adults from UMAR to dig onions, beautify the Garden and help to do various other tasks around the garden. We all had a great time!

Homework through WOW week is linked through the home page.

12/7/11  Carter Macon Rudisill arrived today at 2:42 am.  She's 7 pounds and 19 inches long.  Everyone is doing well!

Below you'll find pictures of Mrs. Rudisill with each class on her last day before the baby.

11/29/11 I'm excited about teaching while Mrs. Rudisill is out.  We'll let you know when the baby arrives. We are about to start studying the Solar System.  Below are links to the assignments for each class for the month of December.  The assignments and activities are all the same, the dates they'll be covered vary slightly. 10/27/11 We are working very hard on the cell unit projects. Projects #1 and #2 are due on Friday, Project #3 on Wednesday, Project #4 on Friday, November 11 and our Cells Test will be on Wednesday, November 16. I am going to attach the guidelines for the project. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or send an email. I hope that the majority of the project will be completed at school.

10/20/11 Cells
We are kicking off our cell unit this week. The unit begins with a look of cells and other specimens under the microscope. Starting on Monday, the kids will be given a packet of activities they must complete either by themselves or with a partner. The activities will all familiarize the student with plant and animal cells and movement into and out of a cell.

10/14/11 Yeast Feast!
The 6th grade finished up their unit on the six kingdoms of classifying living things. We concluded the unit (6 Green will conclude on Tuesday) with a Yeast Feast in TED. The students each made a pretzel as we talked about the fungi and plant kingdom. I have had requests for the recipe so here is the link to the recipe: http://kidshealth.org/kid/recipes/recipes/pretzel.html
We modified the recipe a little by adding more water as needed. I also rubbed the pretzels in melted butter to allow the cinnamon and sugar or salt to stick. It is a super easy recipe and they taste pretty good!

Our next unit is on microscopes followed by a study of cells.

9/18/11 Quest on Weather
You should study your notes on weather, the green sheet about air masses and fronts, and the chapter review on 304 and 305. Remember also all the work that we have done on hurricanes.

8/17/11 - Sixth Graders are starting the year with a short study of common tools found in the science lab. We will also review basic expectations in the lab. An interactive project will help us to reinforce the tools learned and expectations! I am looking forward to a great year!

10/27/10 - Sixth Grade Science students are deep into our study of cells. We are working on various projects to master the organelles and parts of the cell. The Trinity to a Cell project is an in class group project. The project will be due for 6 Red at the end of class on Friday, October 29 and for 6 Yellow and Green at the end of the class on Monday, November 1. We will be having a test on Thursday, November 4 on cells (pages 42-47 in the Life Science book).
